Disaster Risk Management

Dates: 9-18 October, 2019

Disaster Risk Management has become a key element of relief, rehabilitation, development and climate change adaptation programs. The course provides theoretical and practical knowledge, tools and methodologies on risk management related to major types of natural, climate-induced disasters. It enables participants like staff of humanitarian aid and development institutions and related organizations including the science community to successfully conceive and implement disaster risk reduction programs, grass-root actions as well as longer-term climate change adaptation. The course offers a unique combination of knowledge transfer, practical exercises, field excursions and learning and sharing among the trainees coming from different parts of the World.

Course Objectives:

Participants not only know the concept, major elements and state-of-the art technologies of disaster risk management, they also are able to assess the context in which risk management and reduction take place and how to coordinate with different stakeholders. They know how to select vulnerable households and communities as beneficiaries of risk management programs in a true participatory approach, how to identify technical means of interventions in the light of their appropriateness related to different types of natural disasters and how to integrate risk reduction into long-term climate change adaptation and development efforts.

Course Content:

  • Risk assessment and risk mapping with GIS (Geographic Information System) both in theory and practice by using a landscape model including detailed hazard analysis and vulnerability assessment (using scoring systems).
  • Means of disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness related to drought, landslide, flood and cyclone in theory and practice including sharing among participants.
  • Assessment of stakeholders and local implementing partners (tools, procedures and approaches).
  • The social, economic and political context of risk management programs and how to link such programs to climate change adaptation and development.
  • Different options of fostering resilience among vulnerable communities related to natural disasters and climate change and tools to identify essential livelihood resources (participatory climate assessment tools).
  • Tools for assessing implementing partners and risk management projects as well as evaluation and monitoring tools.
  • Mainstreaming DRR in humanitarian aid and development cooperation.

Martin Becher works as an enthusiastic trainer and consultant in the field of disaster risk management and adaptation to climate change in Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe. He is a geographer by training and passionate for his main goal: to change training participants’ views regarding hands-on possibilities to consider disaster management in daily routines, enabling them to make successful use of training content when going back to their home countries.
